Among several institutions or organized entities, which act in a serious and dedicated way, QUARTZO selected some and has sought to contribute to the excellent work that these entities have been doing.

SELECTED INSTITUTIONS

THE MARIA OF MAGDALA HOUSE

THE ASSOCIATION OF FRIENDS OF THE SICK OF MARIA OF MAGDALA HOUSE was founded on July 22, 1991, with the idea of providing an integrated action of education and social assistance to people with the AIDS virus, terminally ill or abandoned by their families.

It aims to provide social assistance, comprehensive health, educational and religious help to adults and children living with AIDS and their families; provide workshops with training courses and income generation to those sheltered and assisted outside; integrate the HIV positive into the community, preserving their cultural values and achievements; respect the human being through the absolute secrecy of the information provided; maintain exchanges with similar institutions, improving their activities; disseminate the feeling of love for others, charity and fraternal assistance to those stigmatized by poor information about AIDS; and to ensure the maintenance of the voluntary in its activities.

It is located at road Washington Luiz, 1956, in the Sape neighborhood of Niteroi city. Telephone number is (+55 21) 2616-2233 and the association is registered in the National Council of Social Assistance and considered to be of Federal, State and Municipal Public Utility. Despite this, it does not receive any kind of subsidy or public money, surviving exclusively from the income obtained from the handicrafts made by the shelters and, mainly, from the donations received.

Adult and child patients, sheltered or not, for not having family support or financial difficulties, what make impossible for them to take care of themselves, seek the help of Maria of Magdala House for the continuity of treatment, receiving a broader assistance from its interdisciplinary team, formed by volunteers from different professions and specialties.

The House has its own pharmacy and handles homeopathic, allopathic, and floral medicines, as a way of minimizing their expenses with medicines, also accessible to external beneficiaries from the surrounding poor communities. The social assistance team aids families with the distribution of monthly basic food baskets, interactive lectures, therapeutic workshops, and a weekly meeting addressing compulsive behaviors. Our volunteer lawyers represent the institution with respect to their duties and rights with society and are very attentive to the needs of inpatients and outpatients, who often face gigantic barriers with respect to their legal rights.

HOW TO HELP

The House is supported by donations from individuals and, eventually, from some companies; selling donated items to the bazaar and bookstore; and some charity events held annually. The donation of foodstuffs, clothing items, medications, hygiene, and cleaning supplies, as well as donations to our bank accounts have contributed significantly so that routine activities are not interrupted.

The items donated to the Bazaar are made available to external assistants and residents of the surrounding poor communities, at absolutely symbolic prices, as a possibility of acquiring quality articles, still in particularly good condition, which seemed inaccessible to them. This helps them to feel socially included, with the joyful activity of “shopping”, like any ordinary person, in addition to becoming a small, but important, way of reversing resources for the Institution.

It is important to note that all material received that may not have immediate application in the House or exceeds our needs are forwarded to other institutions, in order to avoid its depreciation due to the expiration of the validity period. The following materials are important and can be donated: miscellaneous drugs, groceries (sugar, rice, biscuits, flour, cornmeal, jelly, natural milk and soy powdered milk, pasta, frying and olive oil, vinegar, coffee, salt, juices, food supplements) and material for internal procedures (female pad with tabs, geriatric pad, bleach, 90º alcohol, cotton, fabric softener, conditioner, 50ml and 200ml disposable cup, toothpaste, deodorant, detergent, adhesive, adult diapers, napkin and tissue paper, cleaning or procedure gloves, paper towels, toilet paper, Perfex, regular and Protex soap, washing powder, reinforced garbage bag 100 and 200L, infective garbage bag 60 and 100L, shampoo and saline for external use). MONTE HOREBE SHELTER

In 1998, the then employee of a shelter for the elderly, Mrs. Alice Oliveira Sabino, faced a painful situation: patients who still needed care were being sent back home, as the shelter had reached its maximum capacity. In view of this, Mrs. Alice, in an act of extreme solidarity, welcomed the surplus of patients in her own home and assumed their care even though she knew that no amount would be paid to support this action.

The number of patients increased, space decreased and so did resources. But nothing stopped this dreamer from continuing with her project. He moved to a bigger house, he also started to shelter homeless people. She moved again to an even bigger house, received new patients, some of whom were able to contribute monthly, although with symbolic values, according to the reality of each one. Finally, in 2008, she moved to their current address, located at Estrada dos Coqueiros, 627 - in the neighborhood of Senador Camara, acquired with the help of other people of enlightened benevolence who joined the cause and made a long mortgage feasible.

Currently, the Monte Horebe Shelter houses fourteen patients with little or no lucidity. It helps not only to the elderly, but needers of other ages are also welcome, as long as there are vacancies. Due to the number of patients, the Shelter has four salaried employees who assist in routine activities, such as monitoring patients to clinics, treatments, personal hygiene, cleaning the environment and preparing the meals.

Even with the symbolic values paid by some patients, there are several expenses for the Shelter, which seeks to supply them through donations. At the moment, the current context of the Covid-19 pandemic made contributions scarce, making it difficult for the Shelter to be able to cover expenses with patients, with the risk of interruption of the institution's activities.

HOW TO HELP

Mrs. Alice and the Abrigo Monte Horebe team need help for the smooth running of the institution, especially food, medicines, hygiene items and some specific furniture, as shown below:

  • Food - any food still within its validity is very welcome, however the current great need is for those considered basic and not perishable.
  • Medicines - any donation of medicine still valid is also very welcome, remembering that the donation of controlled drugs is not allowed by the Ministry of Health.
  • Hygiene Items - in this category, absolutely all help will be very well received, from geriatric diapers, potty, gauze, cotton, toilet paper, cleaning products and whatever else is possible.
  • Specific furniture - the institution needs bedding, pillows, mattresses, and single beds, these are also used to expand the number of places for patients.

In addition to the forms listed above, you can also contribute financial aid. Just contact the institution by calling (+55 21) 97030-1269 or, as is preferred, paying a visit to see the beautiful work they have done, at the address of the shelter, described below:
